Scholarships

The Pruning Club administers two scholarships: the Margie Potts Aesthetic Pruning Scholarship and the Hands-on Pruning Scholarship. The Aesthetic Pruners Association (APA) administers the Sachiko Umehara Scholarship. Details and links to apply are below.

Details

The Margie Potts Aesthetic Pruning Scholarship is designed to cover tuition costs for each of the 15 Aesthetic Pruning series classes required to achieve the Aesthetic Pruning Award. Other resources may be available to help students with academic class tuition and other educational costs.

This scholarship is awarded to a student who wishes to take the yearlong series of Aesthetic Pruning classes offered at Merritt College, and whose application demonstrates a stated need and an educational commitment to learning the craft.

Margie Potts was an active member in the Merritt College Aesthetic Pruning Club for many years. She developed and shared a Bay Area Pruning Calendar as a tool to help pruners determine pruning schedules throughout the year. Proceeds from the sale of the pruning calendar and other contributions fund this scholarship. We express gratitude to Margie and her family for allowing us to honor Margie and support budding pruning professionals in this way.

Deadline to apply: December 1

The Hands-on Pruning Scholarship is designed to cover tuition costs for the Hands-on Pruning Class beginning each year in January. This yearlong class meets six times a semester (twelve times total) in Bay Area gardens. It provides the opportunity for students to put into practice what they have learned in the series of Aesthetic Pruning courses taught through Merritt College.

Applicants must have been admitted to the Hands-on Pruning Class in order to be eligible. The scholarship will be awarded as a credit for the class fee for two semesters.

Deadline to apply: January 5

The Sachiko Umehara Scholarship, funded by the Aesthetic Pruners Association (APA), is designed to help cover the tuition costs of the academic classes and Aesthetic Pruning series classes offered through the Merritt College Landscape Horticulture Department.
