Aesthetic Pruning Curriculum
Below is a complete listing with descriptions of the aesthetic pruning fee-based classes and one credit-based class offered through Merritt College.

Fee-based Classes
LH800 Introduction to Aesthetic Pruning
Introduction to aesthetic pruning of ornamental trees: assessment of the tree and setting, timing and procedures for achieving a desired result.
LH 801 Pruning Deciduous Trees & Shrubs
Study of the art of pruning deciduous trees: dormant pruning of trees, pruning containerized trees and shrubs, techniques to improve winter silhouette.
LH 803 Finding the Essence of a Tree
Identification of different tree forms such as slant, formal upright, windswept and clump. Pruning techniques for these various forms.
LH 804 Pruning Flowering Trees & Shrubs
Pruning, styling and care of most of the flowering trees & shrubs found in East Bay gardens: when to prune, selection of tree form and fertilization.
LH 805 Rock Placement in the Landscape
Theory and practice of placing rocks in the landscape. Includes tools and equipment used to place rocks.
LH 810 Pruning Maples
Study of the techniques needed to prune maple trees: seasonal pruning, proper care, trouble analysis, winter silhouette and form enhancement.
LH 811A Pruning Pines
Basic techniques of pruning ornamental pine trees, including styling, design and proper care.
LH 812 The Art of the Focal Point Tree
In-depth study of the techniques needed to prune the focal point tree: tree form, location, detail pruning and special care.
LH 815 Pruning for the Big Picture
In-depth study of pruning for the big picture: general and detail pruning, depth of field, height and width, direction, relative importance of trees.
LH 816 Pruning Container Trees & Shrubs
In-depth study of pruning container trees and shrubs: detail pruning, miniaturizing, caring, wiring and positioning.
LH 817 Pruning Japanese Gardens
Basics of pruning plants found in Japanese gardens: pruning specific types of plants, creating moods and feeling through pruning, problem solving.
LH 818 Pruning Conifers
Pruning of ornamental conifers: seasonal pruning, restoring and styling of conifers.
LH 819 The Art of Tree and Shrub Reduction
Pruning techniques needed to reduce large trees and shrubs: proper timing, form reconstruction and plan of approach.
LH 823 Aesthetic Pruning As A Career
Business aspects of aesthetic pruning: customer relations, fee structure, work schedule, equipment and long-term goals.
LH 831 Pruning California Native Trees & Shrubs
Study of the techniques needed to prune California native trees and shrubs: seasonal pruning, proper care, trouble analysis, winter silhouette and form enhancement.
LH 839A Introduction to Bonsai
Bonsai as an art and science: five basic styles, branch placement of trees, scale of proportion, use of wire, pruning, transplanting and care.
LH 848 Pruning Deciduous Fruit Trees
Pruning of the majority of deciduous fruit trees grown in the Bay Area.
LH 881 The Art of the Wisteria
Pruning and training of wisteria. Identification and discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the different species of wisteria, and explanation of the growth and training methods to provide optimal flowering. Problem solving.
LH 891 The Art of the Laceleaf Maple
Study of the techniques needed to prune laceleaf Japanese maple trees: seasonal pruning, proper care, trouble analysis, winter silhouette and form enhancement.
Credit-based Class
LH26 Pruning
Basic pruning techniques: emphasis on pruning landscape plants, appreciation of good pruning of trees, shrubs, conifers, roses, berries, grapes. Intensive 2-day class, required for most certificates.
